How to Clean a Loft After Rats - 2024 Guide

Discovering rats in your loft can be very distressing, but it isn't just getting rid of them that's a problem. Once they have been gotten rid of, you will need to thoroughly clean and sanitise the loft space. In this guide we will give you eight steps to clean the loft and also the knowledge of when to call an expert. These steps are as follows, 1. PPE, 2. Ventilation, 3. Removal of debris, 4. Removal of insulation, 5. Removal of rodent waste, 6. Disinfection, 7. Seal entry points, 8. Monitor. We will explore these steps in more detail below.

Our Nine Step Guide

Step 1 - PPE:

Before you begin the clean you will need the relevant PPE. This being, gloves, N95 mask and protective clothing. This will help in avoiding the harmful substances left behind by rats such as urine, droppings and nesting materials.

Step 2 - Ventilation:

If you are able to allow ventilation of fresh air through the loft, this is a must. This will help disperse any lingering odours and improve air quality.

Step 3 - Removal of Debris:

You will need to remove any debris or clutter within the loft. If items have been affected by rodent waste, we recommend attempting to clean it. If it cannot be cleaned, you will need to dispose of these items. If they are heavily sodden, you will need someone who can remove hazardous waste.

Step 4 - Removal of Insulation:

If you have had a small infestation with only a small amount of rats, you may be safe in removing only a couple pieces of insulation. But, if the infestation was large it will require all the insulation to be removed. This can be challenging to do if you do not have the proper waste licenses to get rid of hazardous waste. We recommend at this point, you hire a professional. If you look at the bottom of this article, we give details on how to get in contact with us to use our professional after rodent cleaning service.

Step 5- Removal of Rodent Waste:

Do not vacuum the rodent waste, this will kick up dangerous dust particles that can make you sick if inhaled, you can only do this if you have a HEPA vacuum. The first step is to wet the rodent waste then remove it. You should double bag the rodent waste and dispose of it accordingly.

Step 6 - Disinfection:

Disinfect any areas that have been affected by the rodents. This can be a time consuming process, as rats will move freely throughout the area. You must disinfect everywhere as when they urinate they can leave a trail of it behind them.

Step 7 - Seal Entry Points:

Any entry points you find, you will need to fill. We recommend the use of either wire mesh, or steel wool to plug the holes. At which point the use of quick set concrete over the holes will stop them from coming back through.

Step 8 - Monitor:

Once the process is completed you must monitor the loft for further activity. If there are no more signs of rodents, then you most likely have sealed all access points and they wont be coming back anytime soon. But, it is still a good practice to check now and again for further activity.

By following these steps, you can clean and sanitise your loft that has been inhabited by rats. This will ensure a safe and healthy enviroment for you and your loved ones. But, if the job is beyond your capabilities, please do not try it yourself. It is very easy to get sick from rat waste and we do not recommend trying a large scale clean on your own.
